This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are living in the 21st century but with antiquated technology in our school. With a class of 30 first graders, our two working computers are in high demand.
I am privileged to teach 30 first graders in an inner-city school in Illinois.
All of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and most are English Language Learners who speak Spanish at home. There is very little technology in my students' homes. Computers and Internet access are simply too expensive for families struggling to make ends meet. Despite challenges in our school's neighborhood, my students are inquisitive and love to learn.
My Project
Each day, my students rotate through five literacy centers, called the Daily Five, to practice sight words they are learning and to develop language skills. One of these centers is listening to reading. While there are numerous free resources for developing readers online, such as phonics games and audio books, my students have limited access to computers to access these sites. A netbook will be particularly helpful during the Daily Five rotations, and we can also use this technology to research topics of interest during our social studies units, create PowerPoint presentations, and play online math games to reinforce critical concepts.
Your donation can provide 21st century technology to my young students for many years to come, helping ensure these children have frequent exposure to engaging online learning opportunities.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and support of urban schools!
