I am a Special Education teacher and volleyball coach at a large urban high school in the Midwest. Our school has a strong focus on academics and sends a large percentage of students to college. We also encourage our students to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as athletics.
In our tough economic times the budget for extra-curricular activities is extremely limited. Our volleyball net system is very antiquated and potentially dangerous. In order for the girls to compete at a collegiate level, it is imperative that they practice with state of the art equipment. At the very least the equipment should be safe. The current uprights are very heavy and the girls are at risk of injury when setting up the net. I would like to purchase lightweight aluminum uprights that can be carried safely.
Participation in athletics helps prepare the athletes for college. They are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to participate. The athletes are required to attend an hour study session before practice; during this time they receive guidance from a teacher on study skills, note taking and time management. Studies show that students that participate in athletics are more successful academically and more likely to attend college. An elite few may even receive a college scholarship; all of them will obtain an increased self-esteem, a sense of belonging and learn about healthy life style choices.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my proposal. Please help me obtain the proper equipment so that participating in safe sports is a realty for my girls.
