I believe the more students learn about the world around them, the more they will learn about themselves. It is so important for them to know and understand the world we live in! I have been searching for a way to find that will bring science and social studies to life for my students in new ways.
I teach second grade in Nashville, Tennessee.
This is only my second year in second grade. My school is a Title I, urban public school. Most of my students come from poverty or homes that are just making "ends" meet. This year I have a group of very sweet, energetic second graders. My parents are very supportive and are doing what they can to help their children be successful in school.
This year our school system, as well as many across the country has limited our time to teach science and social studies curriculum. We are also now adopting a new social studies text from this point on.
My Project
I am requesting 25 copies of both TIME For Kids and Scholastic News magazine for Grade 2. For many years, I have wanted to purchase student copies of both Time for Kids and Scholastic News for my students. I think now more than ever, these resources could be used in our classroom. I just don't have the personal budget to do so and my students families do not as well. These are great reading resources for the students. Both Scholastic News and Time for Kids utilize current events that are age-appropriate for children and integrate science, social studies, and culture into the curriculum in an engaging way.
Scholastic News sends out 32 issues. They also offer a copy of Science Spin for Grade 2. This includes a printed Teacher's Guides and access to their comprehensive digital learning tool.
Time for Kids Grade 2 send issues out once a month, from October to May for 28 total issues. They also offer a copy of TFK Around the World for Grade 2. This includes a print magazine, a whiteboard resource for teachers, digital editions, and teacher resource.
TFK and Weekly Reader both would be used in my classroom weekly.
I am excited for the opportunity to use these magazines to help integrate science and social studies using current events and the full color, grade level appropriate text. They will also be excited to read them!
I would greatly appreciate these resources for my students. This is my second year in 2nd grade so I am still gathering resources and my school is Title I.
Thank you again for considering this project!
