School should be more than reading, writing, and math. We need to bring the arts back.
I teach the 3rd grade STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) class.
I have students that benefit from hands-on activities. Like most children my students get excited when they can "show me" what they have learned rather than just telling me.
My Project
My students need basic art supplies, including Scholar pencils set, 12 pounds of Sculpty EZ Shape colored clays and an electric pencil sharpener. As a regular classroom teacher I have materials for reading, writing, and math, but very little for Art. Since becoming a STEAM teacher I have tried to implement art into my regular lessons, but I do not have the resources to do much. These materials will help get us started. The pencils will allow my students to sketch their engineering ideas. Also the clay would be great so my students can create 3D models of their projects. I hope to engage my students by doing many hands-on projects.
These materials will allow my students to take what we have learned in reading, writing, math, and science and take it a step farther.
I truly believe if you tell a child something they will forget it but if you let them "get involved" with what they learn they will remember.
