This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school are very diverse. I have students that have grown up all over the country and I have other students that have never left our state. Students speak multiple languages at home, and some students are still learning English.

One thing all of my 9th graders have in common is that they are starting their high school careers.

My class will be their first high school math class - the foundation for future classes. Many of my students are the first generation in their families to graduate high school, and we are increasing the number that go on to college each year.

Our students are kind citizens. Instead of a senior prank, our senior class participates in 'Prank it Forward,' where they pay it forward and raise money for a community member in need. Whether it's a fellow classmate battling cancer, an elementary school student with an undiagnosed medical ailment, or a family that has experienced a tragedy our students believe in kindness and inclusion. These are the role models that my freshmen look up to, and as they get their turn as seniors in a few years, those are the shoes they have to fill.

My Project

The joke is often that teenagers are bottomless pits - they're always hungry. But, some of our students come to school without proper nutrition. Sometimes it is because they overslept and needed to choose between breakfast and making it to class on time, and other times their breakfast simply isn't enough to sustain a growing body until lunch time.

How can a teenager focus on solving quadratic equations and other complex algebraic concepts when their stomach is grumbling and interrupting their thought process?

A hungry student is not a productive student, and having access to small snacks in the classroom is an easy solution to the hunger dilemma!
