HELP: Non-fiction Scholastic News magazines needed. For the past 14 years I have taught kindergarten, first and second grade. This year I moved to fourth grade. I need more on grade level reading material on subjects that engage and excite them.
I teach at a Title One School where 93 percent of the students are on free or reduced lunch.
Every year my students come to my class hungry for good non-fiction sources of reading. These readers would give them access to many different science and social studies concepts.
My Project
Scholastic News and Science Spin are magazines written specifically for each grade level. Each week the students will get a new magazine. In addition to having a paper copy of the magazine. Teachers will also have access to each magazine on the SMART board and online.
It comes with printables to use in class. There are highlighted vocabulary words and a quiz on the back to check for comprehension. They even have some articles that are written by kid reporters. The magazines meet the Common Core Standards for Second grade so they can be incorporated into our Science and Social Studies block.
These magazines are a great way to provide my students with additional non-fiction resources.
They are written on their level so not only does it help expose them to more science and social studies concept but they can also help build fluency by reading appropriate grade level texts. We can also use them with the whole class by using the SMART board and online version of the magazines.
