Nearly all of the students in our small school district come from low-income households. All students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. My students all have communication impairments; some have more severe disabilities, such as Autism, Down Syndrome, or Cerebral Palsy, which make communicating even more challenging.
Despite social, educational, and economic challenges, my students are eager to improve their communication skills!
Students will be learning virtually for at least part of this school year. Since we are faced with a very limited budget for even the most essential supplies, funding for virtual materials is even more limited.
My Project
We have just been informed that we will start the year with a virtual learning model. Since speech therapy has been provided face-to-face until this point, we do not own many digital speech therapy materials. The document camera is needed to be able to show students pictures from paper-based assessments and therapy materials. The materials purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers will be presented in my virtual speech therapy room, but will also be printed and turned into physical materials, file folder games, interactive books, and flash cards that can be emailed to parents/students or sent home via U. S. Mail. I plan to purchase a set of digital articulation cards, social skills activities, and core-word activities for students with severe disabilities.
This project will support student speech and language growth and carryover through the parent coaching model and home practice.
When we are able to return safely to the school building, these materials can be laminated and used in the classroom. The document camera can still be used for years to come. Thank you so much for your support.
