This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wow, I can't believe we are starting week 12 of school. Where does the time go? Well, more importantly, where did their supplies go?

I teach children who experience learning disabilities in the great city of Chicago.

88% of our students are classified as low income. Our student body is 21% African American and 72% Latino. 

The reality is, my students are fighters. While their parents fight for a job, they fight to learn and they face a limited English language vocabulary.

My Project

Back in September, day 1, some showed up to school with new spirals, pens, etc. Many didn't. And, since I was awarded a grant by DonorsChoose, I was able to hand supplies to those who needed them. Their eyes lit up and they began to learn. But, now it's week 12 and I am not sure if they ate the pencils or if they actually worked so hard that they used them up? And, where did that chart paper go? I saw them use, and they continue to use the markers and colored pencils from previous grants, but now they want sharpies to design their Math charts. So, who am I to stop them?

So, please, if you have a few bucks these last few weeks of the 2011 year and want to keep the momentum going, dig deep and send a few George's or Abe's our way!
