Needed: A Class Library as Diverse as the Students!
Help me give my students a diverse class library. The books that I have chosen highlight characters that are strong women, are Black, Latino, Asian, and/or have a hearing loss/Deaf.

My Students
As a new special education teacher my goal is to provide an engaging and inclusive education for my students. My students are all deaf/ hard of hearing and all come from diverse backgrounds that enrich our class community.
They are a group of students who despite having to overcome challenging obstacles each day, come to school smiling and ready to learn!
My Project
It is important that students see themselves in characters in books that they read independently and that we enjoy as a class in read aloud. My class is made up of students who are Black, Asian, Latino, female, male, and each are deaf/hard of hearing. I'd love for them to see people who look just like them celebrated, support anti-racism, and support inclusion. Books should serve as both a window and a mirror for students into the real world and students should see themselves and people who may be different in the books they read.
It is crucial to start conversations at a young age about how to be an ally for one another and that each of our differences makes our communities stronger.
A diverse classroom library teaches students to be accepting of others and that each of us may experience situations differently. These books will allow our school community to continue fostering a truly inclusive, anti-racist school community that shows empathy for others and respects diversity and differences.
