This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are striving to be the best people they can be but are lacking the everyday habits they need to live greener lives.
We are an inner city school with students of Hispanic descent who recently immigrated to the United States.
They are very friendly and enthusiastic about learning. They come from areas and backgrounds where recycling is not encouraged. While learning about the current state of our environment, they are becoming more inclined to take action and do their part to save the planet. Our new Environmental Club is pushing them to think about finding the most efficient ways to recycle.
My Project
We have figured out systems for bottles and trash but we are lacking an effective paper recycling system.
We started with left over cardboard boxes as our paper recycling bins but are realizing they are not sturdy enough. They come in a variety of colors and are not consistent amongst the classrooms thus causing confusion. In addition, the school aid reuses them for many things and it would be beneficial to him if we did not use up most of the boxes.
If we were to use plastic bins, we could use them for years on out and it would be clear and consistent where paper should be discarded. Rather than getting the more expensive Rubbermaid bins, we figure these would do just as great a job. Students will learn to recycle on a regular basis and pass these lessons on to future generations.
Since most of the students are in school for a greater part of the day, an organized recycling program will encourage them to make recycling a part of their every day life.
These are habits and values they can teach others for the rest of their lives.
