This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The challenges that face most of my students is that they struggle with academics at school and struggle to survive at home. Most of them are second language learners from very low income families.
For the most part, they are happy and healthy.
But they are faced with problems of drugs, jail, domestic abuse and living in small homes with many family members. To them this is normal, however they struggle with academics in the classroom for a variety of reasons. Some have the support of parents to help them, but some parents can't help them because of deficiencies in language, education or time. Even though they arrive each day with a fresh outlook, they are soon discouraged with their below average performances on reading, writing or math. I would like to offer them another opportunity to shine besides their test scores. I feel everyone is good at something they just need the chance to try.
My Project
I am asking for percussion instruments in a variety of styles in order to give the students different degrees of difficulty to try. We listen to music and use music often, and it only seems natural to let them practice keeping the beat and possibly discovering their talent. I chose a variety of percussion instruments to practice on plus learn about their origins too.
My students are nine and ten years old and this might not have an impact on all the students, but I feel confident that this will touch most of the students who will probably never have a chance to try a percussion instrument.
My goal is to develop stronger self confidence in students who struggle with academics and maybe make a difference in some of their lives.
