Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are high-poverty, high-needs, and wonderfully diverse. The school is at the highest percentage of FRL (free and reduced lunch) in the county at 83%, and has a diverse population of about 60% Latino, 35% African American, and 5% other. The school has a high transient population and most students start high school at or below grade level in reading and writing. Despite all of the challenges that face them every day, my students provide a wealth of knowledge for me and are the most resilient kids I've ever met. They are creative and want to learn.

I primarily teach honors level students and they are always looking for new things to read that will challenge them.

This project will give these students the opportunity to be introduced to new titles that are on higher level and geared to their interests. Anytime new, relevant novels are introduced to these students, they light up and get so excited because they are not generally given access to many books at home.

My Project

The third unit we teach in Ninth Grade Literature is about American Social Movements. Students choose between Civil Rights, Black Lives Matter, Chicano, Immigration, Labor, Women's Rights, #MeToo, or LGBTQ. Students read, research, and teach the rest of the class about their chosen social movement. This year, we are trying to use culturally relevant fiction books to have students read and analyze to supplement their research.

Your support will provide high-interest, culturally relevant books to high-needs students.

These high-interest, culturally relevant novels will provide my students more insight from fictional narratives about their chosen social movement and allow for a small group reading experience. Minority students need to see themselves as the heroes of the literature they read, and this project will help provide this reading experience for my students.
