Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title I public school in Washington Heights, NY. We serve over 500 students, PreK- 5th grade. Sadly, this community was further devastated by COVID19, but despite the challenges faced daily, my students continue to be fascinated by the world.
Apart from their intelligence and effort, my students have a 'hungry mind' and are always looking forward to expanding their knowledge.
They are passionate and talented performers. As a teacher, I have had to harness their passion for the arts and learning preferences to make the Math classroom a place where they can thrive even though it may not be their favorite or strongest content area. I have such diversity in student strengths, struggles, and needs. During remote instruction, I had to get very creative with how to target the needs in class that became much greater due to separation, lack of technology, and limited communication.
My Project
We use technology in our classroom daily for math and literacy, but because of COVID 19, group work is no longer an option. The iPad and iPencil will provide my students with an independent learning center to be used during math, science-literacy, and reading.
During our science literacy block, my students will use the iPad and iPencil to practice annotating complex texts using Notability, a multipurpose note-taking app, specially made for students.
Notability is also used during math as it provides a feature to change the background to show graph paper to use to model fractions, multiplication arrays, and practice making and exploring properties of polygons. Students have the capability to export notes as PDFs to access on their remote days at home. Additionally, students will use the iPad & iPencil to use Reflex Math program to build math automatically.
An iPad and ipencil will allow me the opportunity to close the achievement gap by allowing my students to have an independent learning center across the content areas of literacy and math. This technology will also allow me to create a better math experience when using in the evening to create lessons for my remote students.
