Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the baseball coach at MSHS. MSHS is already an extremely underfunded public school in a very poor socioeconomic suburb of Miami. It is a Title I school that has many homeless and/or foster care students. We have a 95% minority population, and about 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Also, a large portion of the students are either in ESOL or ESE programs.
Our baseball program has a rich tradition of success on the field, but more importantly, we offer a safe place for our players to mature, learn, and become positive influential participants in society.
We currently have 3 seniors committed to play college baseball, and we continue to work hard on getting all of our players into college. Sports not only helps students in the classroom, it also helps them enter the real world, after their careers are over, with skills and attributes that will help them become successful at whatever they do.
My Project
Due to Hurricane Irma, we lost the roof to our dugout where we stored our baseballs, and other equipment. Baseball season is fast approaching and we have only a few balls to practice and play games with. Also, the balls we do have are old, worn out, torn, and heavy.
Our baseball program has a rich tradition; including notable alumni, that have made it to the MLB, and championship seasons.
We usually have enough money to get by; however, the hurricane really set us back. Baseballs are extremely expensive, and are something we did not budget for. The kids would greatly benefit from these baseballs, and help make their experience at MSHS first class.
