Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in grades PK-5th grade and often need to see the counselor for various reasons including problems that may be happening at home or at school. Young students may not have the vocabulary to express what they are feeling, so using puppets as a means of expression is helpful.

I am the proud school counselor of almost 500 students in grades PK- 5th grade.

Our school in an inner city school and most of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the students have personal or social problems that may hinder their academic performance.

My Project

As the counselor, I am the person students turn to in order to work out problems so that they are able to give their full attention to their schoolwork. I have requested a puppet theater and multi-cultural puppets that the students can relate to. Students will use the puppets to make it more comfortable to talk about their problems.

Students may be shy or embarrassed about sharing their problems with a grown-up.

The puppets make the situation more comfortable and less intimidating. Young students also express themselves better through play than by using words alone. Students need to be well in all areas of their life in order to perform at their academic best, therefore the counselor is very important in the life of the students.
