This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"Can I have an eraser?" "I need a pen to edit." "There are no more tissues!" "My stomach hurts! I'm hungry!" are phrases that I hear multiple times every day. The transition from elementary school to middle school is difficult. I am requesting pens, Post-it notes, cleaning supplies, tape, snacks, and more to help students ensure they have all the needed supplies as they transition from elementary school into middle school. Lockers, switching classes - students are now required to be responsible for everything, and this can be quite difficult for many 12-year-olds. Additionally, even the most organized of young adults, unfortunately, just do not have the means to afford all the tools they need.

Given the environment where I teach, many of my students do not have the basic school supplies required to have a successful day at school.

This not only impacts them individually but impacts all students, as the number of disruptions and the extra time it takes to ensure that everyone has what they need to begin a lesson is quite daunting. I hope to provide each student with a travel kit of supplies to make sure they not only have everything they need, but can easily keep all of their materials together, so they are not only prepared for my class but all classes and work at home.
