Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Necesitamos Tambores, simply stated, we need drums. I teach in a high need urban K-8 school, with a very high Hispanic Population. Many of my students are in bilingual classes. Even with the language barrier, they all clearly express their desire to play percussion instruments. My students have a great interest in music and especially in drumming.

Unfortunately, we do not have the money in our budget to have an adequate number of instruments to implement a drumming program. I have between 22-27 students in each class and with the small amount of materials that we have, I am not able to prepare a lesson that provides for all students to have a turn. With a long wait for an instrument, students become bored and disruptive. It is not a productive learning environment.

The drums and auxiliary percussion that I have requested will allow for students in a class to work in pairs and to have the whole class engaged in the lesson. Our school also holds monthly assemblies in which grade levels showcase their learning. My students would be so proud to be able to perform at these assemblies and showcase the skills they learned in music class. Every teacher in my school works as a team to help our students become good citizens as well as students. Drumming provides another opportunity for the students to work together in a community, to share responsibilities as well as learning a valuable musical skill.

Your donation will provide our students with so many experiences that they desperately need and will bring a new energy and enthusiasm to my music classes.
