This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a loving, energetic group of high school students at an urban school in the heart of Manhattan. Many are English Language Learners, have special needs, or are safety transfer students who struggle because the education has failed to provide them with equal opportunities to succeed.

My students this year are returning to my in-person mathematics classes after being fully remote for 18 months, and are now going to be adjusting to the new norms that come with the changes from the pandemic.

Through the challenges of remote learning, these students have stayed so positive, worked so hard, and are trying their best to appreciate school and take their education seriously. They have remained resilient and positive, and continue to exceed my expectations and make me proud.

My Project

This project is asking for graph-ruled composition notebooks and rulers for my Honors Algebra II and Algebra I courses. These notebooks will be used to help students organize their thoughts and ideas as they problem solve through our course and the world around them.

Not only is math class a place to learn how to compute mathematics, but it is a great space for students to learn organizational skills and note-taking skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their life.

Students surely will be using more technology as a result of the pandemic, even as we transition back to in-person learning. However, that does not negate the fact that with muscle memory, you internalize material better the more you write it out. I will be asking my students to continue to take notes and show their work mathematically in physical notebooks throughout the year, in addition to their online portfolio of work.

With your help, I can supply notebooks and rulers (to draw margins, graphs, etc.) for any student who is unable to buy their own supplies for various reasons. Many of my students were directly impacted emotionally, physically, and financially by the pandemic. I want to ensure that regardless of their circumstances, they all are provided equal opportunities to learn and succeed within my classroom.
