My Students

Our school is in a rural area where students may come from low-income and high poverty environments. Many of our students are transient because their parents are in the military. Our district is working hard to ensure students have digital devices and technology they need to help them complete homework and interact in multi-media environments in the classroom. Our students have a great work ethic and want to excel. They are supportive of each other and support teachers who have a strong desire to give their students more of the tools they need to be successful.

My Project

These GPS devices will be used to increase my students' knowledge of geography in and around our community. With these 10 GPS devices, classes of students can be divided up into small groups so that all students can experience the exploration and learning that geocaching provides. Geocaching is an outdoor exploration activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” anywhere in the world. I have used this technology before to provide activities related to Geography and to create scavenger hunts for review of vocabulary and instructional content. With more devices, all my students can all be active participants.

I plan to use these devices to create activities that take my students outside and give them access to new technologies and learning experiences beyond the classroom walls.

The use of these devices will provide enriching and memorable learning experiences for all my students.
