Research states that 40-60% classroom books should be nonfiction and that 30-60% of the books should have been published in the last 10 years. Most of my nonfiction books are outdated library discards, and I don't have nearly enough. My students need access to newer, higher quality books.
My school is considered "high poverty", and many students come from disadvantaged homes.
As someone who came from a disadvantaged background, I feel motivated, every day, to set high expectations for my students. I believe that every child can learn, and every child can succeed if we give them the tools they need to soar to new heights. Through rigorous lessons, inquiry-based learning, and a simulated virtual United States tour, I strive to provide my students with the best I can give. That, of course, involves a whole lot of love, sweat, and tears. It also takes a lot of my own money. Our district has phenomenal administrators, but our budget does not allow them to provide teachers with ANY money to buy materials. Please help me to provide my students with high quality books that will help them become better readers and writers! Thanks in advance!
My Project
Please consider what you read as an adult. While you might pick up a novel now and again, I'm willing to bet that the majority of your reading is nonfiction. Nonfiction typically encompasses the bulk of adult reading because it includes newspapers, manuals, cookbooks, directions, and professional literature needed on the job (among other things). Being able to understand text features like captions and diagrams are critical for success in your homes, careers, and general everyday life.
Students must learn how to navigate nonfiction using text features and the organizational structure of the genre, not only to be able to read text-books and be successful in the classroom, but also to be successful out in the real world. My job is to prepare them for that world, but I need your help.
As a newer teacher, I have very few resources, especially nonfiction books. Most books have been passed down to me or are library discards. They aren't engaging, they're outdated, and crumbling.
This project is so critical because, if it's funded, my students will have access to high quality informational and biographical texts.
Through mini-lessons, explorations, and many extensions the students will have the tools they need to successfully navigate textbooks as they move into upper-elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. They will also be ready for the world, and isn't that our ultimate goal anyway?
