Navigating Narrative Nonfiction

My students need multiple copies of leveled narrative nonfiction text books for a unit of study on narrative nonfiction text.

My Students

"Nonfiction is boring!" cried my students. They haven't been carried away in the life and story of a biography. They haven't yet experienced how to examine text structures, draw on prior knowledge and grow and grasp ideas. Biographies are one way to glean information and ideas on famous individuals.

We are small, suburban, close-knit community and this is an inclusive classroom of 3rd grade students with diverse levels of reading skills and abilities.

Last year our district implemented the Readers Workshop program. The program is ideal for an inclusive classroom as each student can read on his "just right" level. Our biggest obstacle has been providing an ample selection of books across reading levels and genres. Our students are currently engaged in expository nonfiction and becoming "experts" on a topic. We hope to provide them with a unit in narrative nonfiction using biographies. They are becoming "nose-in-the-book" readers who never want to put their books down and who are learning that reading informational and factual texts can be exciting!

My Project

Current standards indicate 50% of reading in third grade should be nonfiction. Within nonfiction there are two categories: expository and narrative. Our students will learn narrative nonfiction follows a predictable story structure. Characters have traits and motivations. They interact with other people and their environment. They face challenges and obstacles. They will learn to hold onto concepts involving social issues, historical events and monumental achievements rather than just mining the text to gather facts. Having multiple copies of biographical texts across reading levels will provide the students with the resources they need to build these skills while enabling them to confer with peers, to share their ideas, to question "why" and "how" events unfold, and to share opinions as well as the life lessons to be learned.

We want to provide students with learning experiences that excite and push their inquiry skills.

We want our students to become lifelong learners and send them off with the skills they need to be able to read, gather information, form ideas and theories, make inferences and clearly communicate information to those around them. Many biographies share a theme of overcoming an obstacle on the road to achievement, an especially motivating concept in a learning disabled classroom!
