My students need these books to help them develop the background knowledge they really need.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know what it is like to grow up in poverty and lack basic materials such as books? This is the life of most of my students. They have a huge hunger to learn, but without the school providing ample resources and books for them to read, they will not have access to literature.
My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with.
They are 100% ESL (they comprise 65% of the school population) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and always want to learn something new!
My students attend a public school in New Jersey. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common in most of their households and the purchase of books for personal reasons simply does not exist for most of my students. If I can provide for them by building an extensive library of high interest books, then I believe I can begin to help them become star students.
My Project
This is my first request for materials and I chose to begin with reading and writing materials because these are the foundation of education. Research points to the reading of nonfiction books as a critical step in helping students not only develop strong background knowledge on many topics, but also helps them become strong and focused readers.
My goals is to use the requested books as a springboard into either larger projects on a specific theme or use them to enhance required coursework.
Reading is at the heart of everything.
True success can never come if one is not literate. The overwhelming majority of my students are performing below grade level. Based on my experiences and conversations with my students, it is evident that they not only like nonfiction books, they PREFER them to others. If I can bring books into my classroom that are high interest, then I feel that I can help even reluctant readers enjoy themselves while also learning many new things.
