This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students represent a spectrum of cultural and economic backgrounds. Teachers in New Mexico are proud of our diversity and inclusiveness. Our students relish hands-on, engaging activities from which they can discover scientific principals and mathematics foundations and be able to express their learning creativity through writing or art.
We are a small school in a village which strives to maintain appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Our rural heritage and connection to the river defines our community.
Our village borders the largest contiguous cottonwood forest in the United States along the banks of the Rio Grande.
The generosity of our community is a big part of what makes our school exceptional.
My Project
Our intent is to meet kids where they already live; bring into the classrooms the natural world they inhabit and enjoy with innate curiosity and interest. We want to stoke, enhance and sometimes reignite their natural regard for the world around them.
We have developed and implemented a schoolwide enrichment model based on students as naturalists.
Our site based naturalist curriculum starts with the study of the environment within a mile of our school; the things our student see every day. We encourage questioning and inquiry. The tasks are low floor/high ceiling and accessible to every student regardless of age, developmental level or ability. Classroom teachers can use the project with as much depth as they and their students desire. Each participating student receives a blank book to be used as their own nature journal. Classrooms are outfitted with a "naturalist corner" which includes a digital microscope, bug boxes, artifact tray and reference books.
More than half of students from low‑income households
