This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My high school students are curious, insightful learners, who want to understand the world around them and to make an impact on their communities. Many of them are active presences in their neighborhoods, volunteering and engaging in service projects to improve the lives of their friends, families, and neighbors.

Most of the students in my class are immigrants or the children of immigrants, and they are deeply committed to their education.

As English language learners, it's critical that they have access to plenty of interesting books at a wide variety of reading levels.

My Project

Students in my American Literature course read novels from The Great Gatsby to Their Eyes Were Watching God, but I haven't been able to give Native voices the space they deserve in my curriculum because of the limited options in our book room. These copies of the excellent novels There, There, by Tommy Orange, and Plague of Doves, by Louise Erdrich, will complement the extremely challenging Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko, and the more accessible Code Talker and Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian to give every one of my eleventh graders, from the immigrant students who arrived in the United States two years ago to the students taking 4 AP courses, a meaningful reading experience.

With these additional novel options, students will be able to work in book clubs to read and analyze contemporary Native voices.

Students will also be able to work across the class to contrast the similarities and differences in the authors' styles and subjects, and understand the impact of Native American literature and culture on the country we live in today.
