My Project
I’m asking for a class set of Christine Day’s incredible novel “I Can Make this Promise” to read aloud with our 4th graders. Christine Day is a local Native author and the book is set in our own community, which is exciting for our students to finally read a book set in our city . But the main purpose of reading this book together is to build empathy and a contemporary view on Native people and history to accompany our Since Time Immemorial state tribal curriculum. There is nothing like connecting to a main character’s journey (a girl their age searching for her Native roots) to build connection, empathy, and context for historical events that affect Native people to this day. When I read this last year to my students we laughed , cried, and had a transformative experience together we will never forget. I hope to recreate this powerful experience with my new 4th graders at my new school. It is even more powerful when they all have a copy of the book in their hands to read along and practice reading a book at grade level and discussing and writing about profound topics that connect to social and ethnic studies as well as critical 4th grade standards. I was shocked at what I didn’t know about the history of adoption with Native children and learned important history and current events from this book which has helped me be a better educator and citizen. This book gives students real life examples of how the history we are learning impacts kids like them today.
