Native American Pride In Literature

My students need 20 copies of "Code Talkers" by Joseph Bruchac.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. S.'s classroom raised $226

This project is fully funded

Help my students see themselves in a great book! I teach 9th grade English on a reservation and my students are 100% Native American. I teach at an Indian school working to combat the effects of oppression and poverty on the reservation by instilling our Native students with pride in their people and culture.

Currently the 9th grade English classroom does not have any sets of novels. We only have a literature textbook which features one dull and outdated "Native American Story". We need great books by Native American Authors about Native American people.

Code Talkers by Joseph Bruchac tells the story of a 16 year old Navajo boy who joins the marines during WWII and becomes a part of the top secret group of Navajo Code Talkers. Code Talkers is engaging, culturally relevant, and written by a well known and successful Native American author. This is a book that will help my students feel proud to be Native. My class needs 20 copies of this book to read and discuss as a group.

Your support will help ensure that my students see themselves and their culture reflected in literature. Having a set of novels will allow my students to be engaged in reading and discussion instead of being bored by text books! Thank you for your donation!
