My Students
Oklahoma means "Land of the Red People," taken from the Choctaw words okla humma, or "red people." This rich Native American heritage deserves attention in my classroom, so I try to incorporate it in core subjects throughout the school day.
Over 50% of the students in my classroom claim Native American descent and over 30% are a member of a federally recognized tribe.
I, too, am Native American! Research shows that students more easily grasp new concepts when those concepts are introduced in a familiar context. Since my students are familiar with Native American culture, it makes sense for me to develop lessons from within that culture. My project, Native American Math, uses Native American culture as a springboard into math and social studies concepts.
My Project
My request for 25 beading looms, beads, cotton warp, and beading needles will engage students in math and social studies. These materials will allow me to introduce Oklahoma history as we study Native American bead patterns. Next, students will design an aesthetically pleasing bead pattern on paper, practicing symmetry concepts, color concepts, and mathematical computation. Finally, they will reproduce their patterns on the beading looms, engaging in more practice of math concepts as well as exercising fine motor and critical thinking skills. One big bonus to this project is that students will produce a tangible piece of work that they will be proud of!
This project is important because it is culturally relevant to my students, and will therefore engage them, increasing their learning.
Not only will they learn math and Oklahoma history while practicing those oh-so-important critical thinking skills, their cultural heritage will be recognized and affirmed within the classroom. Thank you for participating in my classroom by helping with this project. Your generosity and benevolence are appreciated more than you can imagine!
