Our school is one of 12 middle schools that operate on the Block Schedule. We are a Title I school with 87% of the students receiving free or reduced meals. There are approximately 150 eight graders registered for my U.S. History Class. This is an educational and enjoyable learning activity that provides opportunities for students to use multiple skills in math, science, language arts, and technology. THE SITUATION: Middle school students often lack the motivation necessary to learn instructed information so that it is understood and not just "momentarily memorized." In this classroom project, students learn the relevance of the historical culture of a variety of Native American tribes through literature, art, and related activities. Students will also learn how the Native American Indian tribes were greatly influenced by their environment. THE SOLUTION: My class project provides a tool for students to create a competitive, yet cooperative and enjoyable atmosphere in which students will actually want to learn information. In examining location, shelter, diet, clothing, transportation, arts and crafts and other unique things, they will learn how these objects are tied to tradition and how the objects and cultures have survived and changed as the native groups move into modern times. Students research and prepare presentations that include posters with six or more of the project focus. They create hand drawn colorful maps, shelter accommodations, and pictures of food, clothing, transportation, and arts and crafts. EMPOWERMENT AND CLOSING: Research has indicated that middle school students respond positively to participating in real life learning situations that provides activities that are simple, short, and have establish objectives that provoke curiosity and inquiry. The top presentations will be video tapped for future class model of exemplary projects. It is our hope that the students will become informed readers learning about other cultures and how they adapt to the environment. It is with projects such as the Native American Indian that students are moved to act providing leadership so that others will become involved in environmental issues like saving the rain forests. It is through your generosity that our students are given the opportunity to integrate art and technology into their Native American Project as they continue in their middle years development.
