Native American Education Program: Cultural Supplies for Native American Students!
Help me give my students supplies to make traditional Native American cultural crafts and learn their languages! All of my students are Native American, and I want to make a program where they can make their own regalia.

My Project
I am Native educator of around 90 Native American students, and I want to develop a program to deepen our students cultural connections to their heritage. With this program, I want to give my students the tools to participate in their culture at school and learn traditional crafts, Indigenous languages and build a community with their Native peers.
Culture is healing for our people, and helps our youth connect to each other, their community, their tribes and school.
With this project, I am hopeful that our students will learn traditional, cultural skills by making ribbon skirts and shirts, for which we will need 3 sewing machines, threads, prewound bobbins, fabric scissors, pins, magnetic pin cushions, fabric markers and seam rippers. I want to help students learn their Indigenous languages, which is why I am asking for Minnesota Ojibwe dictionaries, and "Wiijibibamatoon Anangoonan/Runs with the Stars", a book in English and Ojibwe to give them an example. I also want my students to have access to an assortment of Native young adult books that represent them and their identities, such as "Elatsoe", "Mascot", "Killers of the Flower Moon (Young Adult Edition)", "Apple: Skin to the Core", "The Sea in Winter", "We Still Belong", "How I Became a Ghost", and "Ancestor Approved". We are in need of storage for these items, like paper trays, to fully furnish a classroom where they feel comfortable being their Native selves.
Our Native American youth are facing educational hardships at deeply concerning levels- in Minnesota, Native youth have a graduation rate of 61%. Connecting to culture in school provides them with a chance to see themselves in their educational journey. Providing a culturally inclusive and encouraging classroom will give them a chance to participate in their traditions at school in a safe space.
