National Poetry Month: Do You Have A Poem in Your Pocket?

My students need inspiration for our school-wide "Poem in Your Pocket Day." Books, like "Here's a Little Poem," "Words, Wit, and Wonder," and "An Eyeball in My Garden" will help!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Campbell's classroom raised $189

My Students

Our annual "Poem in Your Pocket Day" calls on all 400+ students to carry a poem in their pocket, and have it ready to read or recite to anyone who asks. Can you imagine the demand for poetry books in the school library?

Our students are "city kids" who represent the diversity of all the neighborhoods around town.

Of the 406 kindergarten through fifth grade students, English language learners make up 35% of the student body, while 41% qualify for free or reduced lunches. Our boys and girls are enthusiastic, energetic, and eager to learn.

My Project

When 406 students are all focused on finding or writing the "just right" poem for "Poem in Your Pocket Day," things can get a little hectic in the library. Resources are quickly depleted. This is our second annual celebration and, unfortunately, the students are looking for inspiration from the same selection of books as last year.

We need to refresh the existing collection of poetry books in the school library so students will have new resources to utilize as they prepare for "Poem in Your Pocket Day." New books will inspire students to create and share poems which best express their personality and sentiments.

You never know when one of the titles will instill the love of this literary art form for a lifetime.
