My Students

My students walk into the classroom with the mindset that they will be trendsetters! We strive to think outside the box and get our hands dirty with hands-on activities and engineering projects. Our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) program focuses on students in grades third through sixth with the hopes of getting them excited about school and becoming cooperative learners who solve every day problems. We are a small school located in a rural community with less than 200 students in our elementary district wide. Funding is extremely limited so students tend to get creative in their projects focusing on using materials from home that can be repurposed. My students really take ownership of their projects when they present them and can tell you exactly where they found each piece!

My Project

Engineering and operating power tools is a desire all kids have; however, they don't often get to do either of those things in elementary school. My fifth-seventh graders were given the challenge to design and construct a wind turbine from scrap! After being divided into teams I sent them on their own. These elementary students researched, designed, gathered materials, and constructed their own wind turbines. All the final designs were tested in a wind tunnel where their energy output was measuring and they underwent consultative judging from a panel of eight engineers and wind energy experts from local cooperations. They then traveled to the state KidWind competition where all our teams placed in the top four spots in the state! Our top two teams, The Epic Wind Warriors and The Air Sharks, have been invited to compete in the National KidWind Competition in Anaheim, California! The amount of knowledge that these students have gained throughout this project has been unmeasurable and we can't wait to see what these kids are capable on a national level.
