National History Day: Triumph and Tragedy

Help me give my students display boards and supplies, and use of a district bus to take us to the regional National History Day contest.

My Students

Our school may be low-income, but my students bring rich cultural heritages to my classroom! They come from all over the world and speak multiple languages. Each one has something to contribute, and each one is in the process of finding his or her voice.

Our students are our future!

They are cautious and curious, reserved and rambunctious, timid and tenacious. Regardless of their style though, they are all excited to explore world history—a history we all share. They take pride in their efforts and push themselves to reach beyond the surface and dig deep into learning!

My Project

National History Day sponsors a contest each year that inspires more than 500,000 students around the world to explore history on their own terms. Last year one of our teachers piloted this contest, and it was such a success that this year the entire grade is jumping in! As our students prepare for this contest, they are engaged in learning and in history in a way they've never been before: choosing and interpreting their own topics, researching primary and secondary sources, writing essays and annotated bibliographies, and creating their own poster exhibits, documentaries, or websites! The skills they are learning —research, writing, editing, collaboration, presentation—will follow them throughout their school years and beyond.

Your donation to this project will help our students complete their National History Day projects and participate in the regional competition—a first for our grade!

I have requested a class set of trifold display boards and supplies, and we need bus transportation to take us to the regional contest.

This project will change our students' lives for the better because they will experience the thrill of creating something that is their own, presenting it to others, and realizing the success of their efforts. Thank you for your support in making this engaging, student-centered approach to learning a reality!
