Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

93% of the students at my Title I school are African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American. Over 60% of my students are Hispanic/Latino, first generation, and/or English Language Learners. As a result, I want to create a literary experience in honor of their heritage. From September 15 to October 15, we will be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. As a first generation, ESL student I know first hand what it is like to feel like an outsider. My goal is to create a safe haven for my students- where they know they are not alone in their experiences.

From memoirs to coming of age novels, YA fiction to non-fiction collections, these books by Hispanic authors feature fresh perspectives and diverse voices.

I have requested a Mexican decorative banner to display on my book shelf along with chart paper to create anchor charts of available texts and author titles. We will also be using the chart paper to discuss major themes in these literacy works by famed Julia Alvarez, Raquel Vasquez Gilliland- just to name a few.
