This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our district sponsors a book club for their elementary schools where they give us a list of books to read over the course of the year. Last year we had over 80 students participate. They volunteered to stay after school and read books, discuss books!

Our school is located in an area of low economic development.

Many of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. They are very bright and curious and passionate about learning! The book club is called Name That Book. From the first day of school I have students asking when we are going to start "naming the book"! Students who are interested meet once a week and it's run much like a regular book club. We discuss plots, characters, ethics and often learn about famous people and different eras of time. I think it's a really great experience for the kids involved. There is also a competition where our best candidates can go up against other schools to answer questions about the books.

My Project

I am asking for specific titles of books from our required reading list. Many of them are Bluebonnet Award winning books and all of them are quality literature. Through reading these stories, the students will not only get good practice with their reading skills, but also developing a passion for reading!

We have had this program at our school for several years and have students who have participated every year from Kindergarten through 5th Grade.

Seeing them get so excited about certain titles or characters is really heart-warming. At the competition this year I overhead students from two different schools comparing their favorites-not talking about Justin Beiber or Iron Man--but discussing books! With this donation, you will enable us to have this after school program for one more year!
