Name That Place In Math

My students need 10 Lakeshore Magic Boards, Magic Board Math Practice Cards, and a Place Value Activity Kit to learn the concept of place value in mathematics.

This project is fully funded

I teach first, second, and third grade students in an Indiana elementary school who need extra assistance in reading and mathematics. This school services a high population of homeless students who crave any extra assistance in basic math and reading skills.

After working with the younger students I realized that they were having a hard time with the concept of money. They love to save their 'bucks' that they earn in class, but they do not know the very basics of number sense and place value in order to understand the value of the bucks they are earning and saving for prizes.

Students love to use concrete objects to learn a concept. Resources that we would love are place value block manipulatives that come with laminated place value cards for the blocks to be sorted on. This block set lets the younger children work on grouping 1's into 10's, and older children learn about regrouping, place value to the 1,000's and build equations based on their groupings. Once the children have completed their daily lessons with place value, their new skills will be reinforced with magic boards math practice cards. The cards represent basic problem solving equations and can be easily worked on once set on a magnetic magic board. Students enjoy working with basic problem solving questions and are given the opportunity to 'teach' the rest of the class about their problem solving strategy once they have checked their work.

By donating to this project you will make it possible for my students to understand the very basic foundation of math including counting and grouping numbers used for addition, subtraction, money skills and on and on! Students will also learn about the value of being a part of a community donation experience and how they can use their own talents and qualities to give back to others in need.
