Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten is often the first experience in school for my students. They are precocious, curious and creative. Many of them have already been labeled "at-risk" because of the obstacles they have faced in their past. Our school is located in an area of low economic development, and my students just don't have the same access to resources that many other students do.
We want our students to develop many passions in school.
We want to teach the whole child. Our students need to have multiple experiences each day to apply their creativity in different ways. They are learning to be readers, mathematicians and artists. You may help inspire them with skills that will help them throughout their academic career!
My Project
One of the things that helps our students grow is reading books. They are growing up in an area of low economic development, so they often don't have books at home. We participate in a district wide book club called Name That Book. The students are given a list of award-winning titles to read throughout the year.
With all the budget cuts our school is facing, we just can't afford to buy the books this year.
We have students willing to stay after school to read these books, discuss the books. This year have several books about refugees, Sergeant Reckless-a true story about a horse that helped win WWII and the Newberry Award winner Hello Universe.
Your donation will help our students be able to practice the skills they are learning. They will learn about history, current events, drama, all while practicing their fluency and comprehension skills. You may help us ignite a passion for reading in our young students that will last a lifetime.
