My Project

I have an amazing opportunity to work with a group of middle school students this summer who are struggling with self regulating their emotions and also struggling in reading. Many of our middle school students had not only learning loss during COVID, they also missed crucial years of social emotional development. My goal is two fold: to teach my students how to self regulate their emotions through yoga, breath work and meditation and to foster a love of reading using engaging texts and journaling.

My students are special because despite the obstacles they have endured, their resilience and eagerness to learn is admirable.

Considered "at risk" because of poverty, I believe that my students deserve to have experiences that a lack of funds usually prevents. This project will allow me to give my students an unforgettable experience using yoga, breath work and meditation in a calming environment. The rug, cushions, and sound system will help me create a calming environment that allows my students to practice the self-regulating strategies that I will teach them. The talking stick, mindfulness cards and workbooks will be tools that will help make the experience meaningful and engaging. The writing materials will help them have an authentic reading experience that will build their confidence through practice and praise. Library pockets will help students keep track of their materials when moving to learning stations. Journals and pens will be used to teach the importance of writing and help students gain their voice and track their progress on library card bookmarks. Finally, stickers will be a part of the positive behavior interventions and supports as students progress. I have a unique opportunity to create a 6 week program that can be carried into the school year. You have my gratitude for your support with this project. Namaste!
