Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low-income, urban, multicultural high school, where over 80% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch, meaning they live at or below the poverty level. My students are excited and eager to learn, but they often need additional supports that are currently not available because of decimating budget cuts.

Along with the lack of funding and resources, my students often do not have the accommodations to receive social-emotional support during school hours, which can play a detrimental role in their overall success.

Oftentimes my students come from backgrounds and home circumstances that discourage motivation.

Since many of my students face daily hardships that impact their learning, my role as an educator has shifted. I have sought ought to research and find new pathways to best support the needs of every child that enters into my classroom door.

I hope to create a positive environment of self-discovery through the use of yoga.

My Project

I recently received my 200 hour Power Yoga Teacher Training that certifies me as a registered yoga teacher.

Yoga is the beautiful fusion of the mind, body, and spirit.

This practice will teach and encourage students to approach daily and long-term circumstances with an open mindset, all while encouraging a strong community within the walls of my classroom. I hope to bring weekly, if not daily, yoga practices into my instruction to foster healthy habits and self-care for students.

I'm requesting 30 yoga mats. These yoga mats will serve as a source of support for students to cultivate an awareness in themselves and their surrounding relationships.
