My Students
Have you ever met sixth graders? On the verge of becoming their own people, they are full of curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm.
As one of the top-performing charter schools in the state, our school is working daily to help our students achieve their full potential.
The students in my year-round urban charter school are 95% low-income. They attend school from 8 AM to 5 PM daily. The staff at our charter school works diligently within our rigorous curriculum to help education come alive!
My students struggle with issues that often fall outside the scope of understanding. From poverty to food insecurity, homelessness to incarcerated parents, they face head-on many challenges that would make adults crumble. Even with these challenges, they come to school each day trying to put their best foot forward and grow as students, in academics, and as leaders.
My Project
In the sixth grade, students conduct an up-close investigation into mythology, using Percy Jackson as their core text. In this unit, students learn about ancient Greek culture, develop ideas of character and theme, and explore the monsters, maidens, and men who make up Greek mythology.
These texts will help my students as they embark on the research portion of this unit- delving deeper into a mythological character to improve their reading comprehension, writing prowess, and collaborative skills.
By adding these books to our classroom library, you are directly impacting my students' access to diverse texts and complex language. These texts will be used in combination with internet resources to build student understanding and skills.
