My Students
What is more effective than having a student-centered learning environment?
I have a fourth and fifth grade combination class with students who are mostly English learners.
They come from low income families and receive free lunch at school. A couple of them have been in the country for less than two years. Despite the socio-economic disadvantage, my students are eager to learn and strive for high academic achievement.
My Project
I am grading my students’ homework and find an A+ paper. How can I show this excellent sample to my class? While teaching reading comprehension, I want my students to tell the class where in the passage or story they find the answers or where the main idea and details are. How can my students accomplish that?
With a document camera, students’ work can be displayed in front of the class in a second. Imagine the pride my students will show when their work is projected on the white screen. If my students can read, rather than listen to others’ writing, they will participate in providing feedback. Instead of telling the students which paragraph and which line they will find the answers, students can come up to the printed material under the document camera and directly point to the answers.
The above examples demonstrate student-directed learning in a classroom.
There are a lot more a document camera can do to assist student learning such as presentations and demonstrations. You will make it possible for my students to create a self-directed and engaging learning environment.
