My Word! Have You Heard of Make a Word?
I teach second grade in an urban area where parents are struggling to make ends meet. We have recent immigrants from many countries (Somalia, Burma, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia).
On a daily basis, I have been using Patricia Cunningham's very successful program called Make a Word. Each of my students has a packet of letters and a holder. However, the paper letters (card stock) and holders (made of file folders) have become raggedy. I spent days, initially, make these materials. I would dearly love to have help funding this proposal to purchase materials of a more permanent nature. I know this type of activity helps. The paper letters and holders I currently use are fragile and replacing them by spending hours constructing them again is not an effective use of time.
I would love to have 10 sets of the Build a Word Games. They are colorful, permanent and would be a welcome addition to our literacy centers. All of my 23 students will benefit from this resource, from my struggling readers to my above-level performers.
By funding this proposal, you will help my students realize their potential. They have the ability; they just need the resources to help them become successful on their way to become life-long learners.
