My Urban Students Will Love Using These Calming Toolboxes!

Help me give my students sensory toolboxes in every classroom and office in the school building to get back to green!

My Students

My students come to school daily with excitement to learn and to be heard. They are the most loving, courageous, quirky, kind, excited learners. However, some of my students have survived severe trauma or they are currently experiencing trauma. Some of my students see school as their safe place to let it all out emotionally. Most of my students are poverty level income which in itself carries it's own trauma. Many have seen violence in their homes or in their community. Some have been the victims of violence in their own homes. Many of my students are grieving the loss of a parent, grandparent or sibling. Many of my elementary students have seen loved ones incarcerated and do not know how to internalize or externalize the feelings that they have.

All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch daily.

Many stay for free dinner. One fifth of my students are English Language Learners.

Many of my students struggle with self regulation and expressing in socially appropriate ways how they are feeling.

My Project

My students try hard every school day to do their best to have great school days. However, at times all young students need assistance with calming down. The students are so proud when they are able to calm down on their own! These get back to green boxes will assist students in learning how to self regulate but not leave the classroom. My students cannot afford to miss any educational opportunity. Having spaces in their classrooms and in offices (like the principal's office, social worker's office, reading specialist office, etc.) will encourage them to remain in the classroom and get back to green while not missing any education.

My students are able to express how they are feeling if they are given adequate time to process their feelings.

With the five minute sand timers they can independently regulate their calm down time. This gives them a sense of control! My students want to have their independence and control.

The heavy duty plastic boxes will hold together in the elementary classrooms. Rubix cubes, colorful water droppers, stretchy string and sand timers give them the chance to refocus. I will also be laminating breathing activities and other calm down activities for the boxes.
