This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a NYC Teaching Fellow in my first year of teaching. I teach a 3rd/4th grade special education class (multiple subjects) in the Soundview, Bronx. My classroom demographic is diverse. My students are of ages 8-10. They have been diagnosed with learning disabilities (speech/language impairment, cognitive/developmental delays, etc.), sensory impairments (visual, auditory), related health alerts (ADD/ADHD) and emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD). I have a class of 12 children this year, 7 boys and 5 girls.
My students read way below grade level. Because of this fact I often have to guided them when reading. I find that my students respond well to shared reading using big books. I often utilize the same five big books that I have with my students. They enjoy our shared reading sessions but unfortunately they have practically memorized the information in these big books.
If you fund this proposal you will give my students an opportunity to be involved in learning how to read and analyze information. Reading from big books with the class allows my students to better visualize how fluent readers read though my module. My students and I would be very grateful for your commitment to learning. Please fund our proposal.
