My students need 20 books about Chemistry to spark their interest in reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I polled my high school students to see how many books they had been asked to read this year. Most of them said one, or two. Really? Getting my students ready for college is harder than I thought. They need more books to read, and fast.
I teach in a large urban high school in the center of the most impoverished part of the city.
The crime and the gang rate is high, along with the pregnancy rate. Students are more like to have a baby or go to jail than to college. Yet, I have an Honors Chemistry class where every single hand raises when I ask them, "who is planning on going to college?" I need more books desperately to help them prepare.
My Project
I recently had them read a novel that was only loosely connected to my Chemistry content (The Hot Zone-it discussed viruses primarily). I realized that there are not nearly enough opportunities for students to read about Chemistry- atoms, molecules, and the scientists who discovered them. My request of the top Chemistry books will provide the critical exposure my students need to quality literature.
I have the motivated students, I just need the resources to get them there.
With your support, these books will become a Chemistry library that students can use for years to come. Thank you for your consideration.
