Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students need a ‘SPARK Zone’. I teach Gifted and Talented students in a low income community. Our groups are called SPARK. I have our curriculum, but I do not have enrichment activities to enhance the curriculum. My students meet in small groups so we have the ability to move about the classroom if needed. Some of my students have a hard time sitting still and getting them to focus through a whole lesson can be challenging sometimes. If I had enrichment activities that aligned with my lessons and my students knew that there would be ‘hands-on’ activities at some point in the lesson, there would be more engagement and focus from my students. My next unit lesson will be on Rube Golberg. Enrichment kits like 'Simple Machines Activity Tub' and 'Engineer-A-Coaster' will help them grasp the ideas from the lesson. My students love hands-on activities that deal with STEM/STEAM. Many lessons in our curriculum align with STEM/STEAM. If I had enrichment activities that I could use in my classroom, I could create a ‘SPARK Zone’. Students would be able to go to this area of my classroom and work on enrichment STEM/STEAM activities such as activities from the Fairy Tales STEM kit or the Build Brick STEM kit for my younger students. Students would also be able to come to my classroom and work in the ‘SPARK Zone’ on their own during their free time, as a reward or on days that I don’t normally get to see them. Getting the STEAM Reproducible Challenge workbooks and the jumbo popsicle sticks would help create centers in my 'SPARK Zone'. Creating this ‘SPARK Zone’ will help motivate my students to persevere and problem solve in an enjoyable way. A ‘SPARK Zone’ will help my students be successful.
