My Students

My first period students are in 7th grade but their academic level in reading and writing is far below grade level. We work on reading fluency, comprehension, and phonics.

All of my students need good books to read.

My homeroom students are mild/mod Special Ed students. They struggle in reading, writing, and math, so we work on those skills in groups and individually.

My 3rd and 6th period classes are ESOL classes. These classes are for students whose first language is something other than English. All of our instruction is in English and the goal is to perfect English so the students are considered "fluent" and can exit the ESOL program. No matter the background or circumstance, these students all need good books to read.

I have written many grants for books so I have books to share with my students here at school. We do book groups and class novels throughout the year. However, when I talk with my students they say they don't have any books at home. My goal is to get a handful of books to each student so they can read for pleasure from the comfort of their own home.

My Project

We never know these days when schools will have to be shut down due to COVID. I want to make sure my students have good books to read from the comfort of their own home.

So many teenagers hate to read, but sometimes they will read a book they typically wouldn't check out just because someone gave it to them; someone they know cares about them.

I tell my students all the time that if they hate reading, they just haven't found the right book yet. There are so many good books out there!
