Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The student population at my school is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. Over 80% of the students in my room are learning English as a Second Language. I see about a thousand students every week, from Kindergarten to grade five.
My school is located in one of the poorest areas of the state.
Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. All of the students receive free or reduced rate lunch, and some of them even go home without food on the weekends.
My Project
Our biggest challenge in our Art room is not having the materials to support our first STEAM program. STEAM is fueled by Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. As an Art teacher I want to incorporate drawing using a 21st century tablet with this Apple iPad Pro with Apple pencil.
My students will develop so many skills incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, into their projects with this iPad Pro tablet.
Pen and paper are so outdated! My students want to make digital artwork with the help of an iPad Pro with pencil. With this new technology they will be able to independently research artists online, find images to draw and paint, and be able to research art projects. Often students have told me that they wished they could use a tablet or laptop during class, but we simply do not have the resources for that. Many of our families are plagued by poverty many of them only worrying about where they might sleep at night or where their next meal is coming from.
Using the iPad Pro to draw takes a while to get used to, and then they become as necessary as pencils. We need to updat into the 21st century and STEAM forward! Being technology savvy is very important in nearly every job in today's market. Besides using this tool to help educate my students about art, they are also becoming familiar with cutting edge technology incorporating Engineering, Arts, and Math into our lessons. Using the iPad in my classroom will not only help my students succeed in my class, but prepare them for success in future jobs by "STEAM"ing toward success. The iPad Pro will become a much-needed tool for drawing once students learn how to use it.
