Help me give my students the magic of reading a magazine so that they can read during lunch and down time.

My Students
I teach math and science to seventh and eighth graders with special needs, with the help of two amazing and dedicated paraprofessionals and several amazing co-teachers. My students come from all different backgrounds and require stability and familiarity in the school setting to be successful.
My students are funny, caring and full of potential.
They are excited to learn new things and are willing to participate to their fullest as long as all of their needs are met. My students love working together and helping one another succeed. We have been reading articles that have been downloaded and printed in science class. My students love learning about real world connections and the topics we are learning in class. I love being able to inspire them to ask questions and learn more about the world around them.
My Project
My students are not always fond of reading. Tt is a struggle for them and they push back at times. When they are reading high interest material that also relates back to the standards I am teaching, then the students are instantly engaged. Science World magazines allow my students to work with the skills they are learning in ELA and practice them to better understand the science content through reading.
When my students see that we are working with the Science World articles, they get so excited.
Excited students learn better. If I was able to give each student their own magazine during class, then we would be able to have small literacy circles. I envision students looking through the magazines to find an article that stands out to them, then reading the article and finding a peer who also read the same article to talk about it. They could educate a peer who read a different article.
A regular subscription to Science World would also allow my students to take home the magazines. I teach twelve students at a time, so we could keep a class set of twelve and three magazines could be signed out for students to take home and share with their families. Sharing these magazines at home would not only solidify the concepts discussed in science, but encourage students to become readers in their everyday lives.
