My Students Need More Sky, More Flowers, More Butterflies

My students need 65 copies of "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros, and one non-reader needs an audio book to read for their independent novel project.

My Students

"You can never have too much sky. You can fall asleep and wake up drunk on sky, and sky can keep you safe when you are sad. Here there is too much sadness and not enough sky. Butterflies too are few and so are flowers and most things that are beautiful." Books are the sky for my students.

I teach at an all-girls inner city public school.

My students don't have enough butterflies or flowers, as Sandra Cisneros describes in The House on Mango Street. They have broken families, dangerous neighborhoods, and limited hopes for their futures. In my classroom, I work to show my students that they are not stuck. They are smart. They are beautiful. They are competent and able.

My Project

I am requesting copies of the book, The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros. My students will read this book for their independent novel project. The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age story about a young girl and her search for a better life. My students' lives parallel that of Esperanza, the main character of the novel. The collection of vignettes shows the struggles and obstacles that Esperanza encounters. This novel has several themes, including identity and self-acceptance, hope and dreams of a better life, and the significance of family. My students will participate in group discussions, make text-to-self connections, complete a creative writing project, as well as learn about their own identities, hopes, and dreams for the future.

The House on Mango Street is a story that every young woman should read.

In the warm, safe, and supportive environment of my classroom, I know my students will be able to learn and grow from Sandra Cisneros' coming-of-age story.
