This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a middle school band teacher in an inner-city school, and I teach students from 6th to 8th grade. Most of my students come from a low socio-economic background in an area infected with gangs and drugs. Many of my students, most poor, tell me that band is the reason they stay in school.
My band really needs a good piccolo. The school is the only local resource for these children. Several students cannot even afford to even pay the rental fee for an instrument.
I have been working over the past two years to get instruments for my school. I have been making progress, but I am still a long way away from having all of my students on working instruments. We are in need of a good piccolo. Currently, I have students sharing piccolos, and this makes it difficult when taking instruments home to practice.
Our marching band has been participating in community parades with great reviews. We won 1st place in our last parade. It is a big thrill, as well as a wonderful team building activity for a group. It also shows the community and the neighborhood what our students are capable of.
I want to give my students the best musical experience possible, and the addition of another good working piccolo to my inventory will complete the band section. It will get another inner city student making music.
